Libraries have always been innovative places, and that’s probably why I’ve spent the majority of my career in libraries. I started at Sutherland Shire Council 35 years ago as a Library Assistant. After 27 years at Sutherland, I spent six years away at other Councils.
I was so pleased to be able to return back to Sutherland two years ago to take up the position of Senior Manager, Arts and Libraries. I came back to Sutherland Shire Council after working at Georges River Council and Wollondilly Council because of the huge opportunity that Sutherland offered.
My portfolio has grown while I’ve been here too – and I now look after Hazelhurst Arts Centre too. I’ve always had a special connection to Hazelhurst. I remember when it opened 25 years ago and we ran a storytime in the foyer for over 200 children. It’s something we’ve begun to do more of, as we bring together our arts and libraries programs and spaces. I’m really proud that Hazelhurst has been able to support our local artistic community through its exhibitions in the Broadhurst Gallery, through classes and events. Not all local government areas have their own galleries that can exhibit local artists, so it’s truly special to be able to do this.
The team here are so passionate and dedicated. They care deeply about arts and libraries, but they also advocate strongly for our customers and try to make these places the best spaces possible for all of our visitors, to be a place where people can learn, study, work, connect, or simply relax.
One of the things I’m most excited about is the opening of the new Kirrawee Community Hub Library. It’ll bring together my two loves – a new library space and service, coupled with hanging artwork and a screening room for films. It will be a truly innovative space – just the way Libraries have always strived to be.
