We are constructing an off-street carpark on Wandella Road, Miranda to improve safety and accessibility.

Wandella Road, Miranda NSW 2228 - between Parkside Avenue and The Boulevarde.

Project timeline

Project start:  Expected  2 July 2024

Expected completion:  Estimated  December 2024

Project background

We’re excited to update our community on the reconstruction of Wandella Road car parking area, adjacent to Seymour Shaw Park in Miranda.

The first stage of the upgrade, the new active youth precinct, was completed and open to the public in November 2023.

We are commencing the delivery of the next stage under the Masterplan to compliment and improve the facilities, by constructing an off-street parking area.  The carpark will improve accessible parking and access by community buses by providing a designated drop-off point.

Consultation with the Miranda community

Council consulted with the local community about the proposed Youth Precinct and Open Space Upgrade in 2022.

The Masterplan provides a coordinated and long-term approach to the way open spaces and recreation opportunities are improved into the future.  The Masterplan for Seymour Shaw Park which was approved in November 2021 following extensive consultation with stakeholders and the community.  Find out more here.

Your feedback also informed the development of detailed design elements for the new carpark.   Find out more here.

Project scope

Work will commence with the Ausgrid’s approved works for a new electrical Mains supply connection across Wandella Road.  Thirteen  trees will be removed to accommodate the Ausgrid approved works and new carpark design.  The carpark works (including lighting) in the carpark will commence one month later.  We will be doing the work in two stages to minimise parking disruption however, there will be a period of time where the full carparking area will be closed to interconnect the two stages of carpark construction.  The first section of the carpark (adjacent to new Skate Park) is estimated to be completed by October.  The remaining section is estimated to be completed in December 2024, subject to weather conditions.

The carpark will improve accessible parking and access for community buses and the work includes:

  • Removal of existing car parking area, amenities building and removal of some trees
  • Ausgrid’s approved electrical works for the supply main.
  • Lighting connections for new carpark design
  • Bulk earthworks required for new carpark
  • Minor drainage, kerb and pavement to suit new layout
  • Accessible pathway connections for bus drop-off area inside carpark
  • Tree planting and landscaping.

Project schedule

Site Establishment – expected 2 July 2024

Stage 1 Practical Completion – estimated October 2024 (subject to weather)

Stage 2 Practical Completion – estimated December 2024 (subject to weather)

Impacts during construction

The site area will be closed for public use during the construction period.

A temporary carparking area will be provided on the corner of Wandella Road and The Boulevarde for the duration of the work.

There will be some impacts to netball facilities, and we are working with sporting clubs to implement alternative arrangements.

We understand that this work may have an impact on the public and apologise for any inconvenience. We appreciate your patience while we carry out these essential improvement works.

Frequently Asked Questions

The carpark upgrade is part of the Seymour Shaw Park Masterplan, which was approved in November 2021. The car parking area is separated from the travelling lanes in Wandella Road and flows in a one-way direction with separate entry and exit points. The off-street carpark will improve pedestrian safety and accessibility for all visitors.

Works are estimated to commence in July 2024 and be completed by December 2024.

At Council we only remove trees when needed, as keeping a ‘green’ Sutherland Shire is important to us and our community.

Our Urban Tree & Bushland Policy requires that we undertake offset planting, as part of any project where trees need to be removed.

13 new trees will be replanted within the new carpark and 42 new trees will be planted elsewhere in the same catchment.

The design of the new carpark integrates improved planting methods and construction techniques to support tree heath.  This includes providing specialised tree pits and bays of permeable pavers to improve access to water, nutrients and airflow for the new trees.

The netball courts and clubhouse will be closed during construction of the carpark.  Major renovations will mean the sports fields  are expected to be closed from September 2024.

We are working with the effected sporting clubs to implement alternative arrangements.

The existing amenities building on Wandella Road will be removed and rebuilt in conjunction with the re-levelling of sport fields. There are alternative public toilets available at the southern end (next to the tennis courts).

You can also use the National Toilet Map to locate nearby facilities.

Once reopened, some parking spaces will have a 4 hour limit between 8:30am and 6pm on Saturdays and Sundays. This will improve the availability of spaces at busy times. The remaining spaces will be unrestricted time limits.
