Project background

We’re excited to provide an update for our community on the Cliff Top Walk project

We are commencing the delivery of the Cliff Top Walk Stage 1 which will extend the existing Cronulla Esplanade to the southern point of the Hungry Point Reserve.  This walk will allow:

  • Greater public access to the Hungry Point Reserve
  • Outstanding views along the walk
  • The public to experience the rich environmental, cultural and heritage value of the Reserve.

Layout Plan

Consultation with the community

Council consulted with the local community about the proposed Cliff Top Walk in March 2021. Overall, the general feedback was very supportive with appropriate suggestions incorporated into the masterplan.  View the results here.

The 2021 masterplan of the Cliff Top Walk was developed in accordance with the Conservation Management Plan and as part of a vision of the Hungry Point Reserve Strategic Masterplan.  The site is heritage listed as it is rich in Aboriginal archaeological and cultural significance.  The Reserve is under the management of Crown Lands however, in collaboration with Council, a Memorandum of Understanding is being developed for the future management of the recreational areas.

This project involves the construction of a walkway and viewing platform on the eastern to southern point of the Reserve – refer to image above.

Project scope

The outcome of the project will allow public pedestrian access from the Cronulla Coastal Walk, to continue around the eastern section Hungry Point Reserve up to headland at the southern point.  The walkway will allow:

  • Completion of the Cliff Top Walk – Stage 1.
  • Greater public access to the Hungry Point Reserve.
  • Experience outstanding views from locations along the walkway.
  • Visitors to appreciate the rich environment, cultural and heritage values of the site.

The project consists of:

  • Supply and construction of a raised and suspended boardwalk to the eastern and southern edges of the site.
  • Stair access from the site entrance at Nicholson Parade connecting to the eastern section of the walkway, comprising tiered concrete and suspended stairs.
  • Accessible viewing platform located adjacent to the existing public car park.
  • Seating areas, viewing platforms and benches provided along the walkway.
  • Minor excavation works to accommodate footings for boardwalk and stairs.
  • Bush regeneration work and landscape enhancement within proximity to the walkway.
  • Interpretative and directional signage.

Project schedule

Site Establishment – August 2024

Completion – May 2025

Impacts during construction

Part of the Hungry Point Reserve recreational area may be closed at times to allow for the construction of the walkway.  These areas will be clearly signposted.  As the walkway is focused on the eastern side of the Reserve, the lawn areas located to the western side will remain open.

Community car parking will remain but may be reduced during construction. We appreciate your patience while we carry out these important works.
