Cr Mick Maroney OAM

In 2018, I led a strategic community campaign, engaging with the Mayor and key Councillors, to facilitate a successful outcome for the local patrons of Engadine Leisure Centre, to keep the pool open all year round. This was a difficult period of time for many people and shortly after that I felt called to get more involved to widen my community and charity work on a broader scale and become politically active. With my wide range of qualifications and experience I felt I could represent the residents of Sutherland Shire and contribute to making our part of the world the best it can be.

E Ward residents identify a number of local concerns including traffic congestion and protecting the unique character of our beautiful bushland and river environment. Ways in which to facilitate this change include but aren't limited to; reviewing current traffic management plans to determine more effective ways to ease traffic around the suburban town centres, building more parking when undertaking projects across the Ward and embedding this in our strategic planning, particularly through precinct plans. Sustaining the unique character of your beautiful bushland and river environment requires careful planning, community engagement, and the implementation of policies that balance environmental preservation with responsible development. This includes more proactive and wider community consultation.

My vision for the Sutherland Shire is to assist in creating a vibrant, sustainable, and inclusive community that thrives economically, socially, and environmentally. Our goal is to enhance the quality of life for all residents while preserving the unique natural beauty and heritage of the Shire. This vision is built on the pillars of community well-being, environmental stewardship, economic development, and inclusive governance.

Formal recognition includes; Order of Australia Medal - services to the community through Sport, represented Australia at the Auckland Commonwealth Games in 1990 (Triathlon), Maroney family English channel crossing World Record 3 x World Champion.
