Cr Joanne Nicholls

Having lived in the Shire for over 30 years and running a local small business for nearly 40 years, I’ve developed a deep understanding of our community's needs and aspirations. I believe that to bring about positive change, it’s essential to be actively involved in the decision-making processes that shape our local area. I’m inspired by the potential to create a more vibrant and connected community, where residents feel valued and heard.

The opportunity to collaborate with fellow councillors and engage with local residents truly excites me. I want to bring my passion for service, my small business experience, and my commitment to community development to the table. By stepping forward, I hope to be a catalyst for change, advocating for solutions that enhance the quality of life for all residents and ensure that Sutherland Shire remains a wonderful place to live for future generations.

During my term, I want to refocus Council’s efforts back to its core functions, ensuring that we maintain and improve our current infrastructure and services. Through prioritising the upkeep of our local roads, footpaths, storm water infrastructure, public facilities, and parks, we can create a safer and more enjoyable environment for all residents.

I also aim to prioritise the improvement of accessibility and sustainability of Port Hacking, and the bays and catchments along it. It’s vital that we enhance access for residents and visitors while ensuring our local waterways are protected and maintained for future generations. Additionally, I firmly believe that diverse voices lead to better outcomes, and that genuine community consultation is essential for sound decision-making at Council. I will work to see Council engage extensively with our community, ensuring we make decisions that truly reflect the desires and needs of our residents.

My vision for the future of the Sutherland Shire is to create a vibrant and connected community that balances tackling housing affordability with ensuring that our community identity is retained. I see a Shire where families feel safe and supported, with access to the amenities and services they deserve. Ultimately, I envision a Sutherland Shire that remains an attractive place to live, work, and play for generations to come.

I have owned and operated a small business within the Sutherland Shire since 1986. My business is in a service focused industry which has allowed me to be in close contact with the community sharing in their hopes and aspirations, as well as their frustrations and disappointments. This level of engagement with the community will assist me in identifying and addressing the main issues of the people I represent.

I hold a Certificate 3 in hairdressing and a Diploma in Beauty Therapy.

I enjoy spending time with friends and family.
