MEDIA RELEASE - Sliding into Summer with the renewed Roger Summers Reserve Playground

Today, Sutherland Shire Council officially opened the renewed Roger Summers Reserve playground in Bundeena, offering a vibrant and engaging recreational space that celebrates the unique character of the suburb. This beloved spot for both locals and visitors now features a variety of new play equipment, thoughtfully designed to delight young families and children.

Among the standout features is a Bundeena ferry-themed play area, a climbing tower with slide as well as a variety of other climbing elements connecting the playgrounds upper to lower-level areas. Families can also enjoy a range of other interactive play options, creating a fun environment for all ages to explore.

The playground’s design was heavily influenced by the community, following extensive consultation in 2022. Resident feedback was incorporated into the planning process to ensure the new playground would reflect local preferences and serve the needs of families who frequently use the space.

Sutherland Shire Mayor, Councillor Jack Boyd, emphasised the Council’s commitment to enhancing recreational spaces across the Shire.

“It was great to see the equipment put to good use as soon as the fences came down this afternoon.  The reopening of Roger Summers Reserve playground has been met with excitement from local families, who have shared positive feedback on the new design and range of play options.

“A treasured local playground, this project was guided by community feedback to reflect the essence of Bundeena. With features catering to a varied age range with the wider playground offering an inviting space for families to gather and enjoy,” Mayor Boyd said.

This upgrade is part of the Council’s ongoing Playground Renewal Program, which each year prioritises playgrounds across Sutherland Shire that are most in need of renewal. Sutherland Shire currently manages a network of 150 playgrounds.

Alongside Roger Summers Reserve, five additional playgrounds are scheduled to open before Christmas 2024, underscoring the Council’s commitment to enhancing recreational infrastructure for residents and visitors alike.
