MEDIA RELEASE - New dog off leash park gets tails wagging
A new destination for dog lovers is officially on the Sutherland Shire map, with Council opening its newest off-leash dog park at Heathcote Oval.
The latest addition to off-leash dog facilities available across the Sutherland Shire was delivered as part of the Heathcote Oval Masterplan, adopted by Council in late 2022, and sets out to provide better opportunities for recreation and support active lifestyles now and into the future.
The nearly 2500sqm facility features a secure 1.8m high fence with two double gated access points, a concrete path leading to a picnic shelter with seating, an accessible water fountain with a dog bowl and a tap for filling bottles, as well as new tree planting and landscaping.
Sutherland Shire Mayor, Councillor Carmelo Pesce said the designated area will allow both dogs and their owners to exercise and socialise in a safe space.
“I’m excited to open this new park for our community that will provide not only residents, but also visitors to the area, even more opportunities for dog owners to get out and get active with their much-loved pets,” Mayor Pesce said.
“Off-leash dog parks provide many benefits including space for dogs to burn energy, opportunities for socialisation with other dogs, and essential mental stimulation that can help prevent dogs from developing problem behaviours.
“I’d like to thank all members of the community who provided input in advocating for added off-leash areas and worked with Council to determine the best location for these facilities to meet demand.”
Council worked closely with local residents to decide on the most appropriate location for the facility, with community consultation dating back to early 2021.
Sutherland Shire boasts a number of dog friendly locations. To find out more about what is available closest to you, or off-leash times at each location, visit dog off-leash areas.
With dogs owners required to keep their pets on a leash at all times in public places, and to ensure their dog is always under control when out in the community, designated off-leash areas provide an important recreational outlet for both dogs and their owners.
Among the facilities which are included on site are dog waste bins and dog waste bag dispensers, with Council reinforcing to all prospective users of the new park the importance of picking up after your dog as part of being a responsible pet owner.
