MEDIA RELEASE - Local cyclists in for a ‘wheelie’ good time at Bike to the Beach family fun day
Cycling enthusiasts across Sutherland Shire are being urged to get on their bikes, with the return of the much-loved ‘Bike to the Beach’ event expected to draw hundreds of riders keen for a fun day of exploring some of the region’s most scenic cycleways.
With the annual event set to take place on Sunday 15 September, with Sutherland Shire Council and event partners PCYC Sutherland having set the wheels in motion to deliver a day of family-friendly activity which will be open to riders of all ages and skill levels.
Participants will enjoy a scenic 7km ride along Sutherland Shire Council’s safe and dedicated cycling paths. Starting at Taren Point Shorebird Reserve, cyclists will journey along the beautiful foreshore, passing Solander Playing Fields, and continue to the finish line at Don Lucas Reserve in Cronulla. This popular route, featuring Council’s shared pathways, provides a safe and enjoyable experience for all.
Sutherland Shire Mayor, Councillor Carmelo Pesce, expressed his excitement for the event’s return, especially after last year’s successful comeback following a hiatus.
“We are thrilled to see ‘Bike to the Beach’ firmly reestablished as an annual event in the community’s calendar. It is a fantastic day that brings families together and welcomes residents of all abilities and ages to enjoy cycling through some of the most picturesque parts of Sutherland Shire,” Mayor Pesce said.
“This event is more than just a ride; it’s about celebrating the joy of cycling, promoting our expanding network of safe cycle pathways, and reinforcing the importance of road and bike safety within our community.”
The finish line at Don Lucas Reserve is set to be a hub of excitement, with a range of free activities for participants and their supporters to enjoy. From an inflatable obstacle course and giant slides to a reptile show, face painting, sausage sizzle, drink stalls, giveaways and games, there is plenty of family friendly entertainment on offer.
“We encourage anyone who enjoys cycling to sign themselves and family members up and take part in what has become Sutherland Shire’s favourite cycling event,” Mayor Pesce said.
“Our ‘Bike to the Beach’ event is a great opportunity for residents to get outdoors, get active, and explore our beautiful cycleways – I’d urge all local cycling enthusiasts to get involved.”
The cycling route will open at 9am, with volunteers stationed at various crossing points to assist participants throughout the ride. Volunteers will remain on duty until the last registered rider crosses the finish line, ensuring a safe and enjoyable ride for all.
To ensure safety and compliance with NSW cycling laws, participants are reminded to check that their bikes are both roadworthy and have a working bell before hitting the starting line, with all riders required to wear a helmet while taking part in the event.
