MEDIA RELEASE - Celebrating creativity among all abilities through the 2024 ShireABILITY Art Award and Exhibition

The tremendous talents of a special group of local artists are set to be celebrated at Hazelhurst Arts Centre next month, with the opening of the 2024 ShireABILITY Art Awards and Exhibition at the Broadhurst Gallery.

The biannual exhibition, which showcases the work of local artists who have lived experience with disability, is set to feature 70 artworks from around 50 talented artists, including some stunning works developed through the collaborative efforts of a number of artists.

Sutherland Shire Mayor, Councillor Jack Boyd expressed that he was delighted to see the stunning variety of works which will be on display as part of the exhibition, highlighting the creativity and diversity of talent among local artists living with a disability.

“This exhibition beautifully demonstrates the creativity within our community, showcasing the many ways art can express individual stories and perspectives,” Mayor Boyd said.

“By bringing these incredible artworks to the public, we not only help shine a light on the incredible artistic talent that exists within the Sutherland Shire, but we continue to build an inclusive community that values the contributions of all its members.”

The exhibition will also see prizes awarded to leading local talents across a range of categories, including the Open Award Overall Winner ($1,000), Open Award Highly Commended ($500), Youth Award Overall Winner ($500), Youth Award Highly Commended ($250), and the People's Choice Award ($500).

These awards encourage participation from artists of all abilities and allow the community to vote for their favourite work of art, strengthening community engagement and inclusivity.

The exhibition will open from Friday 6 December, with visitors able to explore works in a diverse range of artistic mediums, including painting, photography, sculpture and drawing.

Local disability service organisations such as Civic Disability Services and The Disability Trust Art Grouphave contributed group works, underscoring the essential role these organisations play in supporting people living with a disability and enabling the creative expression for individuals they support.

“We are grateful to our sponsors, Miranda RSL, Sylvanvale and Freedom Solutions Australia, for their support of this meaningful initiative. Their partnership is instrumental in ensuring this event continues to grow and inspire our community,” Mayor Boyd said.

The annual exhibition and awards are an initiative of the Sutherland Shire Access and Inclusion Sub-Committee, reinforcing Sutherland Shire’s dedication to promoting inclusivity, diversity, and access for all.
