Forest Horn and the Myth of the Ring Master

Ceramics

Stoneware, paper, clay, brass tubing

Forest Horn and the Myth of the Ring Master is inspired by the deeply-rooted history of the French horn. Prior to its use in classical music, the Waldhorn (forest horn) was a communication tool used during the hunt on horseback through the fields and forests of the countryside. My body of work is a whimsical exploration of the varied evolution of the ring-like horn: from forest-floor fairy-rings to the glorious heights of the Ring Cycle operas by Richard Wagner. My work represents the French horn’s surreal transformations from primitive nature to the myths and legends of the Romantic sublime.

My artmaking practice has been influenced by the study and interpretation of the following artists: Sandra Davolio, Vessel with Blue Edges 1; Luigi Russolo, intonarumori [instruments].
