Oil on wood board

Sanskrti Sankraman (Acculturation) explores the importance of heritage in forming identity. My intent in this body of work was to invite the viewer to consider the struggle of finding a balance between two cultures. My work was inspired by Romantic artist François Boucher’s works in which idealised women and landscapes represent human emotion and the sublimity of the natural world. Influenced by the techniques of Romantic painters, I chose to use oil paint for its sense of realism, and the large scale of the work expresses the overwhelming conflict of being bicultural, both Indian and Australian.

My artmaking practice has been influenced by the study and interpretation of the following artists: François Boucher, The Love Letter, and John Glover.
