Three blue framed portraits of feminine female faces adorned with butterflies. There are also three smaller framed objects, also in blue. The frames are linked with 3D butterflies stuck to them.

The Burden of Eve

Painting

Watercolour, gouache, pencil

Inspired by a poem by Sappho, my body of work explores ecofeminist philosophical concepts that examine the intersection of the natural world, women and the exploitation of both for resources. This work represents our spirituality and desire to be celebrated for our femininity as a strength, not a weakness. Each figure expresses both dismissal and longing; the books and Lepidoptera are our transformations as we are guided from the past, through the present and into the future. I intend to challenge the audience to reflect on how patriarchal capitalism affects our world and consider humanity’s dependency on the natural world.

My artmaking practice has been influenced by the study and interpretation of the following artists: Atsuko Goto, Miho Hirano, Demian Asche.
