Collateral Damage

Drawing

Coloured pencil on paper

The title of my body of work, Collateral Damage, means ‘unintentional casualties resulting from military operations’. This is a term that dehumanises and invalidates the experiences of the innocent bystanders exposed to the impacts of conflict and war. Using my privilege of living in a safe country, my intent is to represent the plight of these individuals in ongoing conflicts such as the Middle East. I used realism as the style and children as the subject of my work to hyperbolise the trauma experienced by these displaced communities. My process involved an initial graphite sketch followed by coloured pencils.
