Deep Down
Drawing, charcoal, metal
I aimed to create suggestive versions of an angler fish and squid/octopus, by describing the defining features of each respective animal and leaving the rest for the viewers imagination, making for a more engaging piece, mirroring the idea that the deep ocean at this current point in time is imagination for most. My fascination with the ocean, fishing and sea life led me down this path and the mediums of metal and charcoal allowed me to express my ideas in the most effective manner. Welding allowed me to create solid single-piece forms, which captured the smooth and streamline surfaces of the creatures, and by heat treating the metal I was able to attain an iridescent effect to capture the colour changing qualities of the squid. Also, charcoal allowed me to capture the shifts in tone in my drawing, making for a more dramatic piece.
