Connecting Threads

Photomedia, interwoven watercolour paper, gold leaf

My body of work replicates tradition Iranian style miniatures and carpets to explore the concept of the loss of my Iranian heritage, which is discarded to participate within the Australian culture. A series is allocated to each individual: my sister, my grandmother and I which is a reflection of my family's extremely varying generational connection with Iran. My sister and I immigrated to Australia at tender age, due to this we have little recollection of Iran and identify as 'white'. Whilst my grandmother is on the complete opposite side of the spectrum as she lived the entire of her life in pre-revolution Iran instigating a deep connection and love for her country. I was deeply influenced by stories from my grandmother from her time abroad in Iran that forms my little understanding, that act as the 'thread' binding me to my roots. This caused me to revise my position within both the Australian and Iranian cultures. The aim of this interactive process would submerge my audience within the Persian culture and show them that hope is not lost, that through the creation of this work my connection with my heritage has been renewed.

An artistic orange brushstroke design forms abstract shapes on a white background. Overlaid on the design is the word "artexpress" in a sleek, modern black font. The orange brush strokes appear dynamic and free-flowing, with splatters and tapered ends.Simplified waratah flower in deep red colour with the words NSW Government in dark blue stacked underneath.
