Graphite on paper

Listening to the stories of my grandfather led me to the realisation that as individuals grow older, they also become wiser, and more enlightened, as a result of greater life experience. Using graphite I was able to experiment with shadow and tone, and to capture detail in the three portraits. As the portraits progress from me to my father, and then to my grandfather, the contrast of the shadow decreases, representing the gradual acquisition of wisdom, contentment and experience that ageing brings.
