Fruit and veg in season this Autumn

The cooler months of Autumn are a great time to head to your local farmers markets or supermarket and grab fresh, in-season and nutritious produce. Eating what's in season isn't just good for you, it's good for the environment too and helps to reduce food waste.

Fruit and vegetables in season this Autumn and creative ways to use them:

  • Apples and pears - great as a snack or used in baking
  • Mandarins - marmalades, overnight oats, smoothies
  • Avocados - smoothies or on toast
  • Pumpkins - pumpkin soup or in quiches
  • Broccoli and Cauliflower - stir fries and cauliflower rice
  • Carrot - cakes, muffins and juices
  • Eggplant - parmigiana and salads

Why shop in season?

Buying in-season produce generally means the produce has travelled less distance due to the abundance of supply available. This also means:

  • Better tasting: Fruit and veggies bought in season tend to taste better than out-of-season. It also ensures the nutrient content is higher.
  • Cheaper: Due to the increase of supply and availability, in-season fruit and veg is cheaper, which can save you money on your weekly shop.
  • Better for the environment: When in season, produce travels less kilometres to get to you. More travel also means more cost and less sustainability.

Before your next shop, remember to check to see what's in season so you can reduce your food waste!
